An Apple A Day

An Apple A Day

How many fruits and vegetables do you eat each day? I don’t even remember what the recommendation is, but I aim for 9 servings each and every day. NINE. It’s a lot. But you can eat a ton and not have much of an impact to your daily calorie intake.

It’s pretty crazy that 1 cookie can have the same calorie count as, like, 16 cucumbers. Not that I would be able to (or want to) eat 16 cucumbers, but you get my point.

I do get more vegetables than fruit, but I eat an apple every single day. And my favorite have arrived in my local markets = Jonagold apples. They are the perfect blend of sweet and tart and they are not too hard. I love them.

When I was growing up it seems like we had only 3 or 4 kinds of apples to choose from, but now I can’t even keep up with all of the different kinds. Red delicious was all I ever ate as a kid. Or whatever kind was going into the apple pie or being carameled.

Some people have tried to tell me that too much fruit is bad for you… really, isn’t too much of anything bad for you? But how much is too much.

In a day and age where so many people list ketchup as their only daily serving of fruits and vegetables, I don’t think we should be discouraging what my husband calls “nature’s candy”. Fruit is an amazing substitute for other sweets.

Oddly, my 7-year-old prefers vegetables to fruit and would gladly choose broccoli over bananas. Good for her. She would also choose cucumbers over apples.

How many servings of fruits and veggies do you get in one day?
