Captivating Books
I loved the Anne Rice book The Witching Hour about the Mayfair Witches. It was long and complicated, but so much story and fantastic characters that were flawed and sometimes heroic. It spans generations and continents. It made me want to visit New Orleans and see the amazing houses. And maybe hunt a bit for ghosts, witches, and vampires.
The Show Settings Were Not Amazing
I was so excited to see the majestic Mayfair house on First Street. But the setting for the TV show did not live up to my expectations from the book. I was expecting a gigantic and foreboding home described in the books, but the house made me think, “meh”. I had pictured it so many times from reading and re-reading the books that maybe I was destined to be disappointed, but it was really just too small. And bland.
And what about the emerald? Why is it so BORING? It’s not even obvious at first glance that it is an emerald.
The Characters Are OK
After reading three books about the same characters, I sometimes feel as if I know them. So often when a book gets made into a show, the characters do not match what I had pictured. But usually there is something there.
I was skeptical about Alexandra Daddario as Rowan Mayfair, but I liked her. I liked her better than the other characters. Beth Grant’s Carlotta was more annoying than scary. Harry Hamlin was fine as Cortland, and I may like him better as the series goes on. But Lasher?! Come on. I don’t know Jack Huston’s work, and maybe he is great. But he is not Lasher. Just like Tom Cruise was not Lestat. Seriously.
Where is Michael Curry
How do you tell the story of Rowan Mayfair without Michael? He is one of the main characters in the book. Essential to Rowan’s story. And to Lasher’s. Why is he nowhere to be found in this series?
Keep Watching or Bail
I am honestly not even sure that I want to watch any more of the show. I want to remember the books and the characters the way I got to know them. So I might be giving up on this show.
